In Loving Memory of Lucy
Fifteen years is a lifetime in so many ways, but when you love someone as deeply as we loved Lucy, fifteen years could never have been enough.
Lucy was never just a dog. She was our family. She was our baby, our companion, our comfort, and the heart of our home.
She had a way of making everything hers. In fifteen years, the only time she ever slept in a dog bed or away from us was when she would travel in her kennel. Our bed was her bed.
She loved her toys, and she treated every single one of them like they were her babies. Fiercely protective of them, as though it were her responsibility to make sure they were safe. If she trusted you enough, she’d proudly show them off to you…just don’t touch them. She was such a good mother.
And then there were the blankets. Lucy loved blankets.
She loved crawling underneath them and settling in for a nap, warm and comfortable and completely content. It didn’t matter whose blanket it was. It didn’t matter if we had spent weeks keeping it new, clean, and untouched. Lucy had other plans. Eventually, she would find her way underneath it, and claim it as her own. And honestly, that’s okay.
It was all hers. The bed, the toys, the blankets, this house.
And somehow, it always will be.
Lucy loved giving kisses, as if every kiss was her own little way of saying, I’m here. I love you. You’re mine. She gave them constantly, as if we needed the reminder that we were loved and appreciated.
For fifteen years, we were lucky enough to be Lucy’s daddies. And she was lucky enough to have two people who loved her more than anything in the world.
David and Julian tried their best to give Lucy the happiest, safest, most beautiful life we possibly could. We gave her everything we could, and she gave us so much more in return. Joy, laughter, comfort on the hard days, a reason to smile when we needed one.
Sometimes love crawls underneath your blanket and claims it as its own.
Sometimes love gives you a kiss and then falls asleep beside you.
Sometimes love stays for fifteen years and leaves a lifetime of memories behind.
Lucy, you were that love.
You were loved as well, each and every day of your fifteen years. And you will be loved for every day that follows.
Rest peacefully, baby girl.
